About us
The Centre for the Deaf (CfD) is our specialist provision offering places to children with a significant hearing loss, who have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP). We are unique, as we are the only mainstream primary school in Lewisham that offers a ‘Total Communication Approach for our Deaf children.’ This entails using a range of communication methods, dependant on each individual child’s chosen mode of communication, their needs and abilities. This includes the use of voice, British Sign Language, Sign Supported English, lip pattern/reading and gesture; reinforced through visual resources, body language and facial expression, all of which help to secure each child’s understanding and promote independent learning.
Our aim is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to develop to their full potential academically, socially and emotionally, in a safe and nurturing environment and be able to communicate effectively and confidently.
All children are fully included into their mainstream classes and activities, with soundfield systems fitted across the school. Children have access to the full curriculum, which is differentiated to meet their individual needs where required.
The CfD provision consists of four dedicated working environments, which are accoustically treated to ensure the best possible listening opportunity for the Deaf children, when completing one to one or small group work. All rooms contain visual, tactile displays to underpin learning, knowledge and understanding of the world around us.
We have a full time qualified teacher of the Deaf and highly experienced Communication Support workers who are all qualified in British Sign Language to level 2 or above.
We are passionate about our school mission statement – ‘All different, All equal, All smiling’ which we feel encapsulates the ethos of our school.
